How did you get your start in beauty?

I got my start in the beauty industry working as a Beauty Consultant for Clinique in 2008. The brand taught me the importance of caring for the skin, product and makeup application, and how to build strong relationships with customers. Interestingly enough, I still use a ton of those tips today! I also worked as a makeup artist for Trish McEvoy, where I refined my skills as an artist – and learned A LOT about building a business.

When did you start writing about beauty?

I studied journalism in college, but admittedly, I’ve always been more passionate about the broadcast side of the business. There weren’t a ton of on-camera opportunities when I first moved to Chicago, so I spent some time pitching beauty stories to local print media. I started writing for ChicagoNow, which turned into a gig over at RedEye. From there, I started writing for other local publications, then I launched my own beauty blog, Pretty in the Windy City. My very first national writing gig was for JET Magazine. I wrote a beauty column called, Beauty School for about a year.

What happened to Pretty in the Windy City?

Honestly, just growth on my part. I launched PITWC 5 years ago, and the conversation about beauty was so different back then. “Fluffier”, if you will. I’m at a place in my life where I feel like beauty is about so much more than applying makeup, or staying on top of trends. Beauty nowadays is about being comfortable in your own skin, and sharing that love for self with others.

Will Townsend Beauty launch a skincare or makeup line in the near future?

What products will you review for Townsend Beauty / Mr. Townsend? Are there any products that you won’t consider for coverage?

I’m a huge fan of skincare, so if you believe the product and/or brand you rep lives up to the hype, send me an email, and I’ll have a look. Feel free to send makeup pitches my way, and let’s have a conversation about foundation shades that would be a good fit for me to test. In regards to haircare, I rock a buzz cut, and I like to feature shorter styles that are on the edgier side. That said, I WILL NOT feature or review haircare tools such as curling or wave irons, blow dryers, diffusers, or any of the like.  Also, please note that I don’t cover anything related to nail care on Townsend Beauty. I cover men’s grooming and style for Mr. Townsend, so if you have stories ideas or products that you believe will be a good fit, feel free to reach out.

I have a beauty question. How can I get in touch with you?

Send me an email: Nicole@TownsendBeauty.com,  and I’ll try my best to write you back within a few business days.
